First Fire and EMS Advisory Board after COVID-19 Lockdown.
Meeting delayed a week. Changed title
Want to understand opening post COVID-19 lockdown: Top Concerns:
- County plan for reopening with clip levels for triggered actions.
- How non-residents are being monitored for the virus.
- Success of re-opening is dependent on:
- Confidence in safety of reopening.
- As quick a reopening as safely possible.
Albemarle Regional Health Services(ARHS) is the only agency in Currituck County testing for and tracking COVID-19. Similar to all Counties with non-existent or poor medical infrastructure Currituck must depend on out of County existing services within the State. ARHS is offering asymptomatic resting (jf you have symptoms you are directed to your Doctor) and reporting what occurs within their sevices. This means for the majority of Currituck County and Knotts Island in particular the reporting is incomplete as anyone using other testing or medical services outside ARHS in not recorded.
Anecdotally I was told that Sentara Princess Anne Hospital was reporting 8 or 9 active COVID-19 cases in Knotts Island last month. ARHS and thus Currituck County has been reporting 1 case in zip code 27950 for months now!

#2021:Care, 2021:Competence #2021:North Carolina is taking a three-phased approach – based on data from testing, tracing and trends and in consultation with members of the business community – to lift restrictions in place to slow the spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic and save lives.
We are currently entering Phase 2.
As the Knotts Island Fire and Advisory Board Representative and a member of KIVFD I want to know these things:
- How is #Currituck County aligning with the 2021:North Carolina plan and what determines when we enter another phase, either moving to Phase 3 or being forced back into the Phase 1 Lockdown?
- How are we tracking the virus within the County particularly concerning testing and contact tracing addressing both residents and as we open non-residents.
- What is the role for both the Fire Department and the EMS services in this? How Can we help?
- Knotts Island specific questions:
- While I know there has been one case of COVID-19 in 27950 zip code I can't find out how many people were tested and what the percentage of positive cases per test is?
- Given the hidden latent nature of the spread of COVID-19 I'd like to know the latency on reporting positive cases in NC if the cases were diagnosed in Virginia? How long if there's a positive test for a Knotts Islander at Princess Anne Hospital before that case shows up in NC COVID-19 Dashboard?
- What is the threshold that would drive the County or sections of the County back into lock down?
I looked at Dare County and they have a Coronavirus Page [1] as the top link off their home page that includes a dashboard which tracks resident and non-resident infection and recovery. I was unable to find the equivalent for Currituck County. I believe something similar would be simple to put together assuming we have the tracking information, particularly if we standardized the use of KIVFD Active911, and that such a page would instill confidence, provide community awareness, and mitigate the risk of reopening while expediting the process.
